  Dirigent Daniel Daréus toert om de wereld met zijn wereldberoemde muziekstukken en staat dag na dag op het podium. Tot hij een hartaanval krijgt en hij het doktersadvies krijgt zeer rustig aan te doen. Hij keert terug naar zijn geboortedorp en neemt een andere naam aan om zijn aanwezigheid geheim te houden. In die tijd van bezinning moet hij onder ogen zien dat zijn carrière slechts een vlucht was uit zijn ongelukkige jeugdjaren. En dat terwijl hij juist weer woont tussen dezelfde mensen van toen.
